Subject: Yugoslavia/October Surprise Found this interesting quote in an article in talk.politics.radical-left, concerning the recent elections in Yugoslavia: "Very far from the international spotlight, there were also elections in Albania. Socialist, Ilir Meta, won. The Democratic Opposition claims victory, too - attacking Meta for rigging and stealing elections. Doesn't that sound familiar? Only, nobody cares." A very good point. Funny the U.S. didn't send Albright down to Peru when Fujimori stole those elections a few months ago. Coincidentally, even if Fujimori and Milosevic both decide to "officially" step down in their respective countries, they still can "legally" rule well into next year. Maybe they should change places? Of course, things may further deterioriate in what's left of Yugoslavia, especially if Milosevic agitates the situation either in Kosovo or in Montenegro. The same author, above, also suggested that Clinton might use any military action by the Yugoslav government as a pretext for a renewed, though probably limited, bombing campaign (similar to his attacks on Iraq in December 1998). This would be Bubba Bill's version of an "October Surprise," geared to further his own political ends and to give a boost Al Gore's presidential campaign. I don't know just how likely this scenario is, but it is within the realm of probabilities.
