14 MAY 1999 -- FALSE BLAME

Today a NATO bombing raid on Kosovo resulted in the deaths of over 100 innocent people. Naturally, NATO immediately tried to blame the Serbian army. In carefully guarded terms, they suggested that the deaths might have been the result of shelling by the Serbian army. This is the same tactic used by NATO's mouthpieces a few days ago, when they implied that their "accidental" bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade was the result of deliberate misinformation (see article).

(Some suggest that it was the bombing of the embassy that was not an accident, as in this editorial.)

These tactics are reminiscent of those used against the Libyan government after Reagan's bombing of Tripoli in 1986. When this criminal act of international terrorism resulted in the deaths of at least 100 people (when a stray bomb demolished an apartment building), our government tried to blame the Libyans, saying that Libyan anti-aircraft fire was to blame. This was an obvious lie since such weaponry is 1) not powerful enough to destroy a large building, and 2) anti-aircraft ammunition is designed to explode before it hits the ground.

So there is little doubt that NATO cluster bombs caused these deaths. These are fiendish anti-personnel (i.e., meant to wipe out people) weapons that are a clear violation of International Law. And while I'm not surprised at the underhanded lying by our government about this incident, I am surprised at just how brazen it and NATO are in their lies, dutifully reported by a subservient corporate media (are you reading this, CNN?).
